Preparing for Surgery

Preparing for surgery can feel overwhelming. We want you to feel informed, prepared and confident. Here’s everything you need to know before your procedure, along with what to expect on the day of surgery and resources to help you or your loved one recover comfortably.

Before your surgery

You'll need to complete several important steps before your procedure.

Pre-registration

Once your procedure is scheduled, please pre-register at least 24 hours before your surgery.

Call 402.552.3251 (toll-free 800.552.8802) between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Be sure to have the following information ready:

  • Names of your spouse, next of kin and emergency and billing contacts.
  • Social Security numbers for billing contacts.
  • Insurance policy numbers and effective dates.
  • The date and type of your procedure.

Your registration information gives us demographic, financial and emergency contact details, serving as the starting point for your medical record.

Children are special people with special needs. We hope to make your child’s visit as comfortable as possible. If you would like a free consultation with a Child Life Specialist, inform your physician and mention it during pre-registration.

Pre-surgical screening

Our pre-surgical screening team is made up of registered nurses overseen by a clinical services coordinator. Screenings help ensure your safety and prevent unnecessary delays or cancellations.

Call 402.552.2493 or 800.552.8802 between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Fax: 402.552.3267

When you call, please be prepared to review:

  • The date and type of your procedure.
  • Your medical record number (if available).
  • The names of your doctors and specialists.
  • Your medical history, including prior surgeries and dates.
  • A list of all medications and allergies.
  • Any preoperative work-up you’ve completed or have scheduled.
  • Any implanted medical devices, such as pacemakers or stimulators.
  • Any special instructions or isolation needs.

If you are unable to reach a pre-surgical screening nurse by 5:30 p.m. the day before your surgery, call 402.552.3224 no later than 10 p.m. and ask for the charge nurse.

During your screening, our team will:

  • Review your health history and medications.
  • Provide pre-operative education.
  • Refer you to additional services such as social work or home health, if needed.
  • Coordinate pre-anesthesia services and retrieve relevant diagnostic results.
  • Support your plan of care and discharge planning process.
