Becoming a volunteer is easy. Please follow the steps listed below.
Complete your application
To start your volunteer journey, please submit your online volunteer application.
Schedule your welcome meeting
The Volunteer Services team will review your application and contact you to schedule a welcome meeting. During the meeting, we'll discuss your interests, availability, and volunteer opportunities that fit your schedule and experience.
Complete onboarding
Before beginning your volunteer assignment, you'll complete:
- Online volunteer orientation.
- A health screen at Employee Health.
- Criminal background check.
- Attend in-person placement meeting.
Please note in-person components are done at the 42nd Street campus.

Start volunteering
After completing onboarding, you'll receive your photo ID badge and volunteer uniform top before beginning your volunteer role in your assigned service area(s).

Volunteers come from all backgrounds and play an important role in supporting patients, families, visitors and staff throughout the medical center. Whether you are a student, working professional, retiree or community member looking to give back, we welcome individuals who are compassionate, dependable and committed to providing excellent service in a health care environment.
Frequently asked questions
Assignments are based on your interests, availability, skills and current volunteer needs throughout Nebraska Medicine. Volunteer opportunities are based on organization needs.
Volunteer Services will help determine the opportunity that’s the best fit for you.
To become a volunteer, you must be at least 16 years old, commit to volunteering for at least six months, volunteer two to four hours each week, and complete the online New Volunteer Orientation.
Before you begin volunteering, you'll also need to complete the onboarding process, which includes submitting required documentation, completing an employee health screening and criminal background check, and finishing any additional onboarding requirements.
Yes. Every volunteer receives onboarding and role-specific guidance before beginning their assignment.
