Nebraska Medicine provides a dynamic range of volunteer opportunities. A variety of service areas can be found at all locations. Below are brief descriptions of a few of the opportunities found at Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center and Village Pointe Health Center.

Ways to Volunteer and Make a Difference

Ambassador (Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center, Village Pointe Health Center)

  • Be a welcoming presence to guests and help them navigate their way through the facility. (Weekdays, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

    • Radiology Ambassadors (Weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
    • Clarkson Doctor’s Building North (Weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Bedside Tablets/ Inpatient Floors (Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center)

  • Volunteers explain to patients how to use the bedside tablet program. Volunteers work with patients and their families to sign up for bedside MyChart, OneChart and explain the other features of the tablets. (Weekdays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., 3 to 5 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.)

Clarkson Gift Shop and CornerStone Gifts (Nebraska Medical Center)

  • Assist customers as they shop for gifts, flowers, candy and other merchandise at the gift shops. Proceeds from the shops are donated to support special projects at the medical center.
    • Clarkson Gift Shop: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Weekends Noon to 4 p.m.
    • CornerStone: Weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Department Assistant (Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center and Village Pointe Health Center)

  • Assist patients and families in clinic and provide administrative support to staff. Departments included but not limited to: (Weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
    • Bariatric Clinic (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Cardiac Rehabilitation (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Diabetes Center (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Internal Medicine Specialty Clinic (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Maternity Waiting Area (Bellevue Medical Center – late afternoons, evenings and weekends)
    • Medical Staff Office (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Midtown Clinic (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Multi Organ Transplant Clinic (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Neurology Clinic (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Olson Center for Women’s Center (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Radiation Oncology (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Resource and Wellness Center (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Physical Therapy (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Weigel Williamson Center for Vision (Nebraska Medical Center)

Emergency Department (Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center)

  • Support families and staff by performing a variety of essential non-medical duties. Must be at least 18 years of age to volunteer.
    • Nebraska Medical Center: Weekdays and Weekends, 6 a.m. to midnight
    • Bellevue Medical Center: Weekdays 4 to 10 p.m., and Weekends, 1 to 10 p.m.

Heart and Vascular Center (Nebraska Medical Center)

  • Volunteers monitor the waiting room, assisting visitors, walking family members to correct locations such as consultation rooms and cath lab, as well as supporting the staff with departmental assistance work. (Weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)

Home Instead Center for Successful Aging (Nebraska Medical Center)

  • Welcome guests to the center; oversee the waiting room. Support staff with various duties in the clinic and Engage Center. (Weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)

Hospitality Cart (Bellevue Medical Center)

  • Enhance the comfort of adult patients and their guests by sharing items from the hospitality cart …crossword puzzles, word search, magazines, playing cards, etc. (Weekdays, Hours Varied)

Infusion Therapy and Cancer Clinics (Nebraska Medical Center, Village Pointe Health Center)

  • Support patients and their families at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center as they attend clinic visits and infusion treatments. Perform hospitality and department assistant tasks. (Weekdays, Weekends (Nebraska Medical Centeronly) 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.)

Patient Mail (Nebraska Medical Center)

  • Brighten patients’ day by delivering their mail and Well Wishers e-mails. (Weekdays, afternoons)

Special Projects (Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center, Village Pointe Health Center)

  • Help with special projects, activities and events as the need is identified, in a variety of departments (as needed)

Volunteer opportunities with additional training & requirements

Angel Hearts and Hands (Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center, Village Pointe Health Center)

  • Individual volunteers or groups interested in knitting, sewing and crafting projects to benefit our patients. Projects include, but are not limited to, prayer shawls, lap blankets and turbans

Animal Assisted Therapy (Pet Therapy) (Nebraska Medical Center)

  • Animal assisted therapy (pet therapy) is a method of reducing stress incurred by hospitalization giving patients the benefits of shared pet companionship. Your dog must be a certified pet therapy dog with a recognized organization to participate. (Weekdays, Varied Hours)

Spiritual Care (Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center)

  • Ensures patients are connected with their spiritual communities and/or the medical center’s resources. An interview with a representative of Spiritual Care is required prior to placement. (Weekdays and Weekends, As Needed)
