Every volunteer brings unique skills, interests, and experiences. Whether you're welcoming visitors, supporting patients, or helping behind the scenes, Volunteer Services will match you with an opportunity based on your interests, availability, and organizational needs.
Volunteer opportunities are available across Nebraska Medicine campuses, including Omaha, Bellevue, and Village Pointe.
Opportunities available
Volunteering is a meaningful way to support our mission while growing personally and professionally.
Below are areas that are available to volunteer:
CornerStone Gifts, Clarkson Gift Shop, and Company Store (Nebraska Medical Center)
- Assist customers as they shop for gifts, flowers, candy, and other merchandise at the gift shops.
- Schedule: Gift Shops: Weekdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Company Store: Weekdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Equipment transporter (Nebraska Medical Center)
- Transport reusable equipment to Clarkson Tower sterile processing from patient floors throughout the Nebraska Medical Center campus.
- Schedule: Weekdays and weekends, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Resource and wellness center (Nebraska Medical Center)
- Welcome guests to the patient resource and wellness center in Nebraska Medicine | Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, explain the services, visit with guests, and support the area by doing assigned department assistant duties.
- Schedule: Weekdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Volunteer services administrative support and patient mail (Nebraska Medical Center and Bellevue Medical Center)
- Assist with clerical tasks, stock supplies, and run errands. Brighten patients’ day by delivering their mail.

Child Life / Pediatrics (Nebraska Medical Center)
- Assist Child Life staff by providing diversionary activities for hospitalized children and helping promote a positive sense of self-esteem and hospital experience.
- Schedule: Weekdays and weekends, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Must be at least 18 years old to volunteer in this unit.
Clinic/department assistant (Nebraska Medical Center and Village Pointe Health Center – coming soon)
- Assist patients and families in the clinic, guest escorts, stock supplies, clean rooms, and provide administrative support to staff.
- Schedule: Weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Emergency department (Nebraska Medical Center and Bellevue Medical Center)
- Support families and staff by performing a variety of essential non-clinical duties, such as stocking supplies, turning over rooms, running errands, and providing administrative support. Must be at least 18 years of age to volunteer.
- Schedule: Nebraska Medical Center - Weekdays and weekends, 24 hours a day; two-hour shifts starting on even hours.
- Schedule: Bellevue Medical Center – 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Ambassadors (Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center, and Village Pointe Health Center – coming soon)
- Welcome guests at the main entrances and help them navigate the facility.
- Schedule: Bellevue Medical Center and Village Pointe Health Center: Weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Schedule: Nebraska Medical Center: Weekdays, 7a.m. to 6 p.m.; weekends, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Radiology ambassadors (Nebraska Medical Center)
- Help improve the patient experience by escorting patients throughout the radiology areas, to other appointments, and to facility entrances.
- Schedule: Weekdays, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Surgery ambassadors (Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue)
- Welcome patients and guests in the surgical areas and help them navigate through the facility.
- Schedule: Weekdays, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Discharge lounge (Nebraska Medical Center)
- Help transport patients being discharged from various patient floors to the lounge, socialize with patients, and complete assigned non-clinical tasks.
- Schedule: Weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Hospitality cart (Nebraska Medicine | Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and Bellevue Medical Center)
- Enhance the comfort of adult patients and their guests by sharing items from the hospitality cart, such as crossword Puzzles, word searches, magazines, and playing cards.
- Schedule: Weekdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Infusion Center (Nebraska Medical Center)
- Support patients and their families during clinic visits and infusion treatments by providing hospitality and assisting with departmental tasks.
- Schedule: Weekdays, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; weekends, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Inpatient unit and patient support (Nebraska Medical Center)
- Support the patients and staff by doing non-clinical tasks. Help patients use the patient guides and educational tablets, explain how to order meals, and access other services to improve their experience. Additional duties include stocking supplies, straightening rooms, completing administrative tasks, and run errands for staff.
- Schedule: Weekdays and weekend, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Specialized volunteer programs
Individual volunteers or groups may knit, sew, or create other craft projects, including, prayer shawls, lap blankets, and turbans.
Pet Therapy is a method of reducing stress incurred by giving patients the benefits of shared pet companionship. Your dog must be a certified pet therapy dog with a recognized organization to participate.
- Schedule: Weekdays, varied hours.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC): Roman Catholic volunteers offer Holy Communion to Catholic patients.
All faiths: Ensure patients are connected with their spiritual communities and the medical
center’s resources.
An interview with a Spiritual Care chaplain is required prior to placement.
