Below are brief descriptions of a few opportunities found at Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center and Village Pointe Health Center.

Volunteer opportunities

Ambassadors (Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center and Village Pointe Health Center)

  • Be a welcoming presence to guests at the main entrances of the medical center campuses and help them navigate the facility. (weekdays, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Anatomic Pathology – NEW! (Nebraska Medical Center)

  • To support Anatomic Pathology by assisting the staff with slide delivery and file slides to storage. (weekdays, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

Child Life/Inpatient Pediatrics (Nebraska Medical Center)

  • To assist the Child Life staff in providing diversionary activities for hospitalized children and help promote a positive sense of self-esteem and a positive hospital experience. (weekdays and weekends, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.)

Clinic/Department Assistant (Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center and Village Pointe Health Center)

  • Assist patients and families in clinic and provide administrative support to staff. Departments included, but not limited to: (weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
    • Cancer Clinic (Nebraska Medical Center) – NEW!
    • Diabetes Center (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Home Instead Center for Successful Aging (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Internal Medicine Specialty Clinic (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Midtown Clinic (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Multi Organ Transplant Clinic (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Resource and Wellness Center (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Olson Center for Women's Health (Nebraska Medical Center) – NEW!
    • Physical Therapy (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Wound Clinic (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Volunteer Services Office (Nebraska Medical Center)

Cornerstone Gifts (Nebraska Medical Center)

  • Assist customers in shopping for gifts, flowers, candy and other merchandise at the gift shops. Proceeds from the shops are donated to support special projects at the medical center.  (weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Emergency Department (Nebraska Medical Center and Bellevue Medical Center – NEW!)

  • Support families and staff by performing a variety of essential nonmedical duties. Must be at least 18 years of age to volunteer. (Nebraska Medical Center – weekdays and weekends, 8 a.m. to midnight;  Bellevue Medical Center – 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.)

Heart and Vascular Inpatient Unit  – NEW! (Nebraska Medical Center)

  • Visit with newly admitted patients, explaining the patient guide, food ordering and other services to help improve the patient’s hospital stay. (weekdays and weekends, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.)

Hospitality Cart (Nebraska Medical Center, Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and Bellevue Medical Center)

  • Enhance the comfort of adult patients and their guests by sharing items from the hospitality cart (crossword puzzles, word search, magazines, playing cards, etc. (weekdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.)

Infusion Center (Nebraska Medical Center and Village Pointe Health Center)

  • Support patients and their families as they attend clinic visits and infusion treatments. Perform hospitality and department assistant tasks. (weekdays, weekends (Nebraska Medical Center) 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.)

Neurology Inpatient Unit – NEW! (Nebraska Medical Center)

  • Visit with patients explaining our educational tablets and other guest tools to help improve their stay. (weekdays and weekends, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.)

Patient Mail (Nebraska Medical Center)

  • Brighten patients’ day by delivering their mail and Well Wishers e-mails. (weekdays, afternoons)

Radiology Ambassadors (Nebraska Medical Center)

  • The volunteers will enhance guest relations and improve the patient experience by escorting patients throughout the Radiology areas, other appointments and entrances. (weekdays, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

Special Projects (Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center and Village Pointe Health Center)

  • Help with special projects, activities and events in various departments. (As needed)

Surgery Ambassadors (Nebraska Medical Center and Bellevue Medical Center – NEW!)

  • Be a welcoming presence to guests in the surgical areas and help them navigate through the facility.(weekdays, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

 

Volunteer opportunities – additional training and requirements

Angel Hearts and Hands (Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center and Village Pointe Health Center)

  • Individual volunteers or groups interested in knitting, sewing and crafting projects to benefit our patients. Projects include, but are not limited to, prayer shawls, lap blankets and turbans.

Animal Assisted Therapy (pet therapy) (Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center and Village Pointe Health Center)

  • Animal Assisted Therapy reduces stress incurred by hospitalization giving patients the benefits of shared pet companionship. Your dog must be a certified pet therapy dog with a recognized organization to participate. (weekdays, varied hours)

Spiritual Care (Nebraska Medical Center and Bellevue Medical Center)

  • Ensures patients are connected with their spiritual communities and/or the medical center’s resources.
  • An interview with a Spiritual Care manager is required prior to placement. (weekdays and weekends)
