ORBERA® Balloon

Break Through Weight Loss Barriers with the Orbera® Balloon

Are you ready to…

  • Feel more energy to keep up with the kids or grandkids?
  • Have a chance to manage or eliminate conditions without medication?
  • Do certain things you can’t do now because of your weight?
  • Experience a healthier life and the freedom to enjoy it?
  • Stop fad diets and pursue real, lasting weight loss?
  • Commit to improving your health and well-being?

If so, you may be ready to take the next steps toward making a healthy weight loss decision. If you are looking to break through weight loss barriers without surgery, and want a safe procedure that requires minimal recovery time, then the Orbera® intragastric balloon may be a great option.

This new noninvasive bariatric procedure has been approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and is providing obese patients with another option to achieve significant weight loss when traditional methods of diet and exercise have not worked.

What Is It?

  • A durable gastric balloon made out of soft silicone
  • Non-surgical, leaving no incisions, stitches, or scars
  • A reversible outpatient procedure
  • Promotes weight loss by reducing the volume of food allowed into the stomach
  • Encourages your body to adapt to healthier portion sizes
  • Helps you lose up to 3 times the weight of diet and exercise alone
  • May help improve or eradicate conditions often related to being overweight

How Does It Work?

  • A deflated balloon is inserted in the stomach and filled to the size of a grapefruit to encourage portion control
  • We insert the deflated balloon into your stomach through your mouth. Once in place, the empty balloon is filled with sterile saline
  • It promotes a feeling of fullness which results in smaller amounts of food being consumed
  • The process normally takes about 20 to 30 minutes and most people go home after a few hours
  • The balloon is temporary and is removed after six months. After care then begins

How Do I Know If I Qualify?

  • You must be an adult who is willing to participate in a medically supervised program
  • Patients are carefully selected after a thorough evaluation process that includes screening by a bariatric surgeon, psychologist, exercise psychologist and nutritionist
  • Because it has a lower BMI than that of traditional bariatric surgery, you may qualify with a lower BMI. The National Institute of Health’s current guidelines for bariatric surgery require patients to have a BMI of 40 and over, or a BMI of 35 and over, with significant co-morbid conditions. This procedure can be performed on patients with a lower BMI of between 30 and 40. "This allows us to offer patients another option as we can intervene sooner and practice preventive medicine," notes Tiffany Tanner, MD, bariatric surgeon at Nebraska Medicine. Calculate your BMI

What Can I Expect Before and After the Procedure?

  • First you will meet with specialists for an evaluation and screening
  • Once you’ve discussed your weight-loss goals, a comprehensive program will be developed for you, which can include one-on-one coaching and expert guidance on dietary nutrition and fitness
  • The next step is placement of the ORBERA® balloon in your stomach to help you exercise portion control and eat smaller meals

  • In the first few days after placement, you may experience nausea or vomiting. In some patients it may last up to one to two weeks. Your specialist will work with you to prescribe medication that will proactively manage these symptoms and help you adjust to the balloon
  • The balloon stays in your stomach for the first six months after the procedure, and then is removed by a similar process as the original placement
  • Patients usually see the most drastic results within six months. During this time you will learn how to use your ORBERA® as a tool to aid in your weight loss, with the help of your support team. You will participate in a behavior modification program and follow a medically supervised diet
  • It is very important to use this time to develop healthy habits that will continue for not only the 12-month weight-loss program, but for the rest of your life
  • Having open and constant communication with your support team is crucial to maximizing the benefits of the ORBERA® weight loss system. Over the next 12-months you will have regular face-to-face sessions with a multidisciplinary team of specialists

What Does It Cost?
