If you have struggled to lose weight with traditional diet and exercise plans, you are not alone. The Nebraska Medicine bariatrics team is here to help you overcome your weight-loss challenges and meet your goals. For some people, weight loss or bariatric surgery is an effective solution to treat obesity and related medical problems.
Bariatric surgery can help improve or resolve:
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Fatty liver disease
Weight loss surgery may also decrease your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, atrial fibrillation, diabetic kidney disease and cancer.
Bariatric surgery is a big step and may not be the right answer for everyone. But for some people, weight loss surgery offers a long-term solution to obesity. Learn if you might be a candidate for bariatric surgery.
What to expect
Before your first appointment, our weight loss specialists will send you a video to watch and a form to complete. After completing the form, we will schedule a surgical consultation with an advanced practice provider or surgeon. They will review your medical history and discuss weight-loss surgery and weight management options.
Treatments options could include:
- Gastric bypass
- Sleeve gastrectomy
- Duodenal switch (DS)
- Single anastomosis duodenal-ileostomy with sleeve (SADI-S)
- Revision surgery
Your provider may order further testing or schedule additional appointments based on your unique situation. It can take three to 12 months or longer before surgery, depending on your health issues and insurance requirements.
Will my insurance cover weight-loss surgery?
You should contact your insurance company directly to determine your policy's bariatric coverage.
