It’s an award that exemplifies what leadership and training are all about. For the first time, Nebraska Medicine’s Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency Program received the 2016 Pharmacy Residency Excellence Program Award by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Foundation.

The award recognizes excellence in program training, research, patient care and commitment to fostering residents’ leadership skills. The award is given to only one program each year in the United States through a comprehensive application and review process.

Since the first graduating pharmacy residency class in 1974, Nebraska Medicine has one of the most established residency programs in the country. There are more than 240 graduates who are practicing all across the United States, including many who currently practice at Nebraska Medicine. According to Patrick Fuller, PharmD, pharmacy staff development coordinator and PGY1 Residency Program director, there are more than 1,200 ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency programs in the country. There are currently nine residents in our 12-month PGY1 training program.

In its award announcement, the ASHP Foundation highlighted the quality of interdisciplinary clinical experiences provided to each resident in addition to personal interactions with outstanding preceptors, and the unique year-long resident leadership development series and annual residency fall retreat.

“It has been a true honor to watch our past and current residents display the utmost empathy, caring and kindness each and every day towards our patients,” says Fuller. “Our residents are the next generation of leaders in our profession. They push us to do our best and continue to shape our profession. I can honestly say the future of our profession is in great hands. I feel deep gratitude to receive this award on their behalf, and thank our residents, preceptors and program directors for setting such a great example.”
