Do you or your child have a misshapen ear due to an injury or birth defect? Do you suffer from esteem issues because of protruding or disfigured ears?

Some patients suffer from macrotia, which causes their ears to be overly large, or they may have had ear surgery in the past that needs to be corrected. No matter the reason, ear surgery (also called otoplasty) may be a solution.

Otoplasty can improve the shape or proportion of the ear, as well as it's positioning. For children generally ages five years or older, it may be an option to correct a birth defect that has stabilized.

What to expect

At your first visit, you will consult with your surgeon to discuss your concerns and goals with surgery. You will receive answer to your questions about what is involved with the surgery, what recovery is like, realistic expectations of outcome, payment options and more. You'll leave the consultation fully informed to make the best decision for you or your child.

This procedure typically uses general anesthesia. Incisions are usually made on the back surface of the ear when able, and external stiches are then used to close the incisions. Ear surgery is customized to the patient. Results are immediate but you will need to take precautions and special care after surgery.

Be prepared to discuss any previous surgeries, existing medical conditions and current medications, so we can provide the best course of treatment. Children, if able, are empowered to communicate their feelings and voice any concerns at this consultation.
