Facial paralysis weakens the muscles on one or both sides of the face as a result of a birth defect, stroke, viral infection, tumor or traumatic accident. It can be devastating, but the good news is, there are treatment options available for patients of all ages.

Corrective surgery for facial paralysis can be very complex. Treatment options will vary depending on your age and location of paralysis, among other factors. Such options may include nonsurgical or surgical procedures. Nonsurgical procedures may include neurotoxins, like Botox to provide additional symmetry to the face by relaxing the stronger muscle. More impactful surgical procedures include muscle and nerve transfers to allow use of the otherwise paralyzed muscle. Additional adjunctive surgeries or procedures may also be recommended to help create symmetry and function of the face.

What to expect

At your first visit, you will meet with your surgeon to discuss your past medical history, your paralysis prognosis, and your goals. If surgery is recommended, you’ll take some photos to serve as a baseline for comparison after your procedure. You'll leave the consultation fully educated about what is involved in your customized plan to allow you to make the best decision for you or your child.
