Sleep apnea or snoring can affect your sleep quality and overall health, leaving you tired the next day. Sleep surgery can reduce snoring, improve breathing during sleep and lessen related health risks. If you suffer from sleep-disordered breathing and nonsurgical methods have not worked for you, Nebraska Medicine sleep surgeons can help you get a better night’s rest.

Some of the conditions we treat with sleep surgery include:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
  • Snoring
  • Nasal obstruction
  • Other sleep-related breathing disorders

Our sleep surgery experts can also provide alternatives if you can’t tolerate CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines or other nonsurgical treatments.  From mild snoring to nasal obstructions to obstructive sleep apnea, we’ll work with you to find a solution that helps you safely breathe at night.

What to expect

During your first appointment, you will meet with an ear, nose and throat specialist to review your medical history and evaluate your symptoms. Nebraska Medicine ENT specialists use various diagnostic tools to identify the cause of your breathing obstruction or difficulty during sleep. Your provider may recommend a sleep endoscopy, an exam that mimics sleep and allows them to see what your problems are in real-time. Once your provider determines the cause of your sleep-disordered breathing, you will visit with a surgeon who will recommend the best course of treatment for you.

Our sleep surgeons offer new and advanced surgical procedures for obstructive sleep apnea such as hypoglossal nerve stimulation. In this alternative to CPAP, a small surgical implant, known as the Inspire system, stimulates the muscles to keep the airway open. Other procedures we offer include nose, sinuses, throat and tongue surgeries.

Why you should choose Nebraska Medicine

Our sleep surgeons were the first in the area to implant the Inspire system, making them one of the most experienced teams in the region. Nebraska Medicine sleep surgery experts are committed to delivering team-based, personalized care to diagnose and treat the cause of your sleep-disordered breathing. Our sleep surgeons partner with specialists across Nebraska Medicine, including ENT and sleep medicine specialists to coordinate your care and help you get the sleep you need.
