Question:

I had a hysterectomy – do I still need to go to the gynecologist regularly?

Answer from Nebraska Medicine OB-GYN Marcela Pineda, MD

Your gynecologist can help you in all stages of life. Routine gynecological care is still important for most women, even after a hysterectomy. The type of hysterectomy performed really matters because it affects what kind of follow-up care you’ll need. Some women still need Pap smears and pelvic exams, while others may not. It’s best to talk with your health care provider to see what’s right for you.

A hysterectomy is a surgery that removes the uterus. But sometimes, the cervix (the lower part of the uterus) is left in place. If you still have your cervix, you should continue to get regular Pap smears. Pap smears screen for cervical cancer, so if you have a cervix, that screening is still necessary.

If you had a hysterectomy due to cervical cancer or abnormal cells, your gynecologist will continue to check for signs of recurrence.

Even if you no longer need Pap smears, there are other reasons to keep seeing your gynecologist:

  • Pelvic exams: These check for ovarian masses, prolapse or other pelvic floor issues.
  • Menopause management: Your doctor can help with hot flashes, bone health and hormone therapy questions.
  • Sexual health: Pain during sex, low libido and vaginal dryness can all be addressed.
  • Screening for STIs: If you’re sexually active, regular screening is still recommended.

Your gynecologist is always here to help you stay healthy and address any concerns you have. Have a follow-up appointment after a hysterectomy to discuss any ongoing care you’ll need.
