Question:

Does red light therapy help with gut issues?

Answered by Nebraska Medicine nutrition therapist Morgan Brummels, MMN, RDN, LMNT, LD:

The research on red light therapy for gut health is limited. While light therapy can certainly influence your circadian rhythm and vitamin D levels — both important for your overall health — you can get many of the same benefits simply by spending time outdoors.

If your goal is to improve gut health, you’re likely to see greater results by focusing on proven lifestyle changes, such as:

  1. Staying physically active.
  2. Getting regular natural sunlight.
  3. Eating fiber-rich foods, such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, and properly prepared nuts, seeds and whole grains (if tolerated).
  4. Including prebiotics in your diet.
  5. Drinking enough water.
  6. Limiting sugary drinks, sweets and processed foods.
  7. Managing stress.
  8. Prioritizing adequate sleep.

If you’re experiencing chronic gut issues, including constipation, diarrhea or irritable bowel disease, start with your primary care doctor. They can help determine the cause and, if needed, refer you to a nutritionist or gastroenterologist for personalized support.
