Question:

What can I do to fix my erection difficulties due to COVID-19?

Answered by urologist Chris Deibert, MD:

Research shows about a 20% increase in the incidence of erectile dysfunction, or ED, in men with a history of COVID-19 compared to those who haven't had COVID-19. While the condition can resolve on its own, that is not always the case. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to treat your ED.

The main takeaway is that ED caused by COVID-19 isn't treated any differently than other types of ED. Depending on your situation, your doctor may recommend an oral medication for ED. However, these medications are not appropriate or effective for everyone. Testosterone replacement therapy can also help, but only in specific, clearly defined situations.

Other treatment options include:

  • Vacuum-assist device – Slides over the penis and pulls air out of a cylinder, which helps pull blood into the penis
  • Suppository – Can be placed inside the penis to stimulate an erection
  • Self-injections – Medication that can be injected into the penis with a tiny needle to stimulate an erection
  • Penile implant surgery – Involves the placement of a prosthetic implant inside the penis as well as an activation pump that produces an erection when activated

Sometimes, getting treatment for other health issues is enough to improve erectile function. In fact, 70% of men with ED have heart disease, diabetes or both. If you have an underlying health condition, you'll want to work with your doctor to manage that first before seeking treatment for ED. After all, getting medical help is not simply about seeking treatment and moving on – it's about addressing underlying issues so you can improve your overall health.
