Nebraska Medical Center has been awarded on Newsweek's list of Best Maternity Hospitals 2022.

This award is presented by Newsweek and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. The list was announced on May 11 and can currently be viewed on Newsweek's website.

Newsweek and Statista developed a methodology to ensure the quality and validity of the ranking. Three data sources were used for the evaluation:

  • Nationwide online survey: hospital managers and health care professionals with knowledge about maternity processes e.g. Midwives, neonatal and OB/GYNs were asked to recommend leading maternity hospitals in the US
  • Medical key performance indicators on hospitals with a focus on indicators relevant to maternity care
  • Results from patient surveys

Newsweek and Statista invited more than 10,000 medical professionals to participate in the survey. Only 350 winners were recognized on the Best Maternity Hospitals 2022 list.

"Receiving the designation as a Newsweek Best Maternity Hospital is a recognition of the teamwork that happens every day in our unit," says Carl Smith, MD, chair, UNMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. "We provide a broad base of care that ranges from normal patients to the very high risk and do so in a way that emphasizes evidence-based, safe maternity care that meets the needs of our patients.  All of our staff should be very proud of the work that they do and this honor is a fitting testimonial."

"Nebraska Medical Center is a unique site for maternal care," adds Teresa Berg, MD, director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. "We have the opportunity to provide care for normal patients and patients with multiple risk factors that require a multi-disciplinary team to assure a safe outcome for the mother and the baby. We have participated in statewide initiatives to improve the safety of maternal care in a continued effort to decrease maternal morbidity in our city and state. This type of effort requires daily teamwork and everyone on the team should be proud of the designation we received."

"This recognition speaks to the dedicated, compassionate and quality care given to our patients and their loved ones by our amazing team of nurses and providers," says Melissa Buman, nurse manager, Womens and Infant Services. "We strive to provide exceptional care in all circumstances and the five ribbons rating is a true testament to that. To be the only hospital in Nebraska to receive this recognition is such an honor and means so much to the devoted staff who are selflessly and passionately committed to the health and wellbeing of all the women and infants we serve. I couldn't be more proud to work with such a phenomenal interdisciplinary team each and every day!"
