Stool-based tests

Stool-based tests check for hidden blood or DNA changes in your stool. These are done at home.

FIT (Fecal Immunochemical Test)

  • Done at home once a year.
  • No bowel prep or diet changes needed.
  • If abnormal, a colonoscopy may be needed.

Stool DNA test (Cologuard)

  • Done every three years for average-risk adults.
  • Completed at home.
  • Looks for blood and DNA changes.
  • No bowel prep needed.
  • If abnormal, a colonoscopy may be needed.

What to know

Stool-based tests are a good option for average-risk adults.

These are good options if you prefer an at-home approach. If a result is abnormal, a colonoscopy may be needed.

Q: If my stool test is positive, will a follow-up colonoscopy be covered by insurance?

A: Yes. If a stool-based screening test is positive, a follow-up colonoscopy is recommended. Most insurance plans, including Medicare, cover this as part of the screening process.

Coverage varies by plan. You may still have a copay or deductible. If you have questions, contact your insurer or our financial counseling team. We can help you understand what to expect.
