Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Substance use and other mental health disorders often go hand-in-hand. The Nebraska Medicine Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides evidence-based, integrated care for people struggling with addiction and conditions like depression, anxiety, trauma-related disorders, bipolar disorder, psychosis, or personality disorders. If you or a loved one is struggling, know that help is available.

What is the IOP?

The IOP brings together a team of specialists to provide a comprehensive approach to intensive outpatient treatment. Our program helps individuals live without addiction while better understanding and managing their mental health.

Is IOP right for me?

Our IOP is designed for adults who need more than weekly or monthly outpatient support but do not require inpatient treatment or withdrawal management.

Why you should choose Nebraska Medicine

Nebraska Medicine provides high-quality, evidence-based psychiatric care while supporting your recovery from addiction. Our program focuses on:

  • Healthy coping skills.
  • Relapse prevention.
  • Managing mental health symptoms.

This program is unique to the region, with a dedicated team of doctors, therapists, nurses, and care staff trained in addiction and mental health treatment.

What to expect

During your first visit, you will meet with a clinical therapist who will complete a thorough assessment. If our IOP is the right fit, we will create a custom plan that may include:

  • Group therapy.
  • Individual therapy.
  • Random urine drug screenings (UDSs).
  • Medication for substance use and other mental health disorders, if needed.

Our IOP teaches coping skills, such as emotion regulation, mindfulness, relapse prevention and values exploration. Family involvement is encouraged to support recovery.

Program details:

  • Meets four days a week (three hours per day) for six weeks.
  • Available in-person or via telehealth (video visits).
  • Regular check-ins with your therapist and doctor.

After completing the program, we will help you plan your next steps to stay on track.
