PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant

Welcome!

The ASPH-accredited PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant Pharmacy Residency at Nebraska Medicine offers a unique and stimulating learning environment which provides comprehensive clinical training in transplant pharmacy practice.  A resident completing this program will become a competent practitioner in the care of transplant patients by gaining knowledge, expertise, confidence, time management, complex problem solving, and critical thinking skills. 

The resident will be integrally involved with health-care professionals throughout the continuum of patient care, including patient education, assessment, and therapeutic recommendations.  Working with experienced pharmacy clinicians, the resident will also gain experience serving as a preceptor for pharmacy students and PGY1 pharmacy residents. Residents will provide compassionate, evidence-based, progressive medical care. The program allows tailored instruction for the individual based on interest and past experiences.

Solid Organ Transplant Specific Practice Area

  • Since the first transplant program was established in 1970 at Nebraska Medicine, it has become a respected leader in solid organ transplantation
  • Nebraska Medicine performs liver, heart, lung, kidney, pancreas and intestinal transplants
  • We have dedicated units and staff that specialize in the care of transplant patients
  • PGY2 SOT pharmacy residents have the opportunity to collaborate with practitioners who are developing innovative therapies that shape the field of transplantation
     

Transplant Research Conference

  • Resident will participate in a bi-monthly seminar where they will present on landmark transplant studies and journal club presentations
  • The articles and topics will be chosen by the resident to allow them to further explore areas that they want to gain a deeper understanding, including disease states, transplant pharmacology and primary literature evaluation

  • Abdominal Transplant Ambulatory Care Experience  (4 weeks)
  • Cardiothoracic Transplant Ambulatory Care Experience- 4 weeks
  • Lung Transplant (3 weeks)

Service Commitment (Staffing) Experience

PGY2 residents are required to fulfill the service commitment (staffing) designed to ensure that residents gain experience and can function as competent clinical transplant practitioners. Each resident will train with preceptors and basic training will take place during the first month of residency. 

As part of the service commitment for PGY2 solid organ transplant residents, the following staffing requirements apply:

  1. Weekend staffing :  8 hour shifts (Saturday and Sunday) on weeks 1, 4, 9, and 12 (of a 16 week staffing schedule) beginning in August (24 total weekend shifts)
  2. Holiday: one 8-hour holiday shift (holiday to be determined in July)
  3. Staffing will occur primarily in transplant-focused areas
