Apheresis

During an apheresis treatment, your blood is processed through an apheresis machine to remove, collect, or replace parts like plasma, platelets or red blood cells. Once the parts are removed, collected or replaced, the remaining blood is passed back into your body. Apheresis can be used to treat diseases, such as autoimmune disorders and various neurological conditions, or to collect donor cells.

During an apheresis appointment, you will sit comfortably in a chair or lay in a bed while your blood is passed through the machine. The process usually takes between one and four hours, depending on your treatment plan.

Why you should choose Nebraska Medicine for apheresis:

  • Nebraska Medicine is home to the only Apheresis Center in the region that treats diseases and collects donor cells. Our center treats both adult and pediatric patients.
  • We also work closely with UNMC to support research efforts aimed at developing break-through medical treatments.
