Nosebleeds are common and usually not serious. Most stop on their own, but frequent or heavy nosebleeds can be disruptive and may need medical care. Nebraska Medicine ENT specialists help identify the cause and provide treatment to stop bleeding and reduce repeat nosebleeds.
Common causes
Nosebleeds often happen due to:
- Dry air or low humidity.
- Colds, allergies or sinus irritation.
- Nose picking or frequent nose blowing.
- Nasal sprays or oxygen use.
- High blood pressure.
- Blood-thinning medications.
When to see a provider
You should seek care if:
• Nosebleeds happen often or in clusters. • Bleeding lasts longer than 20 minutes. • Nosebleeds affect daily activities or sleep. • You take blood thinners. • Bleeding after an injury to the nose or face.
How nosebleeds are treated
Most nosebleeds can be managed at home by sitting upright and gently pinching the soft part of the nose for 10 to 15 minutes. If bleeding continues or returns often, an ENT specialist may treat the bleeding area in the nose using nasal cautery to stop the bleeding and help prevent it from coming back. The nose is numbed first to improve comfort, and the treatment is usually done during an office visit.
Preventing repeat nosebleeds
To help reduce future nosebleeds:
- Avoid putting tissues or objects inside the nose.
- Keep the inside of the nose moist with saline sprays or nasal lubricant.
- Use a humidifier in dry environments.
- Avoid nose blowing for a short time after a nosebleed.
Some people experience frequent nosebleeds on one side due to a deviated septum. Your provider can help determine if this is a contributing factor.
Nosebleeds in children
Children commonly get nosebleeds from colds, allergies or nose picking. Most are not serious, but frequent nosebleeds should be checked by a healthcare provider.
