Living with an LVAD

Adjusting to daily life

Living with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) takes time to adjust to, but many patients return to daily routines and activities.

You will carry your controller and power source with you, usually in a vest or crossbody bag. Over time, this becomes part of your routine.

Caring for your device

Daily care helps keep you safe and healthy.

You will learn how to:

  • Keep your driveline clean and protected.
  • Check your equipment daily.
  • Manage batteries and power connections.

Staying active

Many patients are able to return to light activity after recovery.

This may include:

  • Walking.
  • Daily tasks at home.
  • Light exercise.

Your care team will guide you on safe activity levels and recovery goals.

Ongoing care

You will have regular follow-up visits so your care team can:

  • Monitor your device.
  • Track your heart health.
  • Adjust your care plan.

When to call your care team

Call your care team if you notice:

  • Signs of infection.
  • Fever or chills.
  • Changes in how you feel.
  • Device alerts or concerns.

Your care team is always available to support you throughout your recovery.
