Before surgery
Before getting a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), you will complete a full evaluation. This helps your care team understand your health and determine whether this treatment is right for you.
Your evaluation may include:
- Blood tests.
- Imaging tests.
- Heart function testing.
- Meetings with your care team.
You will also talk through your goals and what to expect after surgery.
During surgery
LVAD surgery is performed in the hospital by a specialized surgical team.
During the procedure:
- The device is placed inside your chest.
- It connects to your heart to help move blood throughout your body.
- A driveline connects the device to an external controller and power source.
The surgery usually takes several hours.
Recovery in the hospital
After surgery, you will stay in the hospital while your body heals.
During this time, your care team will help you:
- Manage pain.
- Begin moving safely.
- Monitor your heart and device.
- Learn how your LVAD works.
Getting ready to go home
Before you leave the hospital, you will be trained on how to care for your LVAD.
You will learn:
- How to manage your power sources.
- How to care for your driveline.
- How to recognize warning signs.
- When to contact your care team.
Follow-up appointments will be scheduled before you leave.
After you go home
Recovery continues at home.
You will:
- Attend regular follow-up visits.
- Continue building strength.
- Adjust to daily life with your device.
Your care team will stay connected and support you through recovery.
