Does Nebraska Medicaid have new work requirements?

Nebraska Medicaid is adding work requirements in 2026. Adults ages 19 and 64 may need to complete at least 80 hours of approved activities in a month to keep their coverage.

Starting May 1, 2026, Nebraska Medicaid will have work requirements for some adults ages 19 to 64. If you're affected, you'll need to complete at least 80 hours in a month of approved activities.

These may include:

  • Work.
  • School (going to an accredited school at least half-time, based on your school's definition of half-time enrollment).
  • An apprenticeship.
  • Volunteer activities.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) manages the program and decides who needs to meet the requirement.
