Nasal cautery is a treatment used to stop frequent or ongoing nosebleeds by sealing a small blood vessel inside the nose. It is typically recommended when nosebleeds do not improve with pressure or preventive care.
When is nasal cautery recommended?
Your ENT specialist may recommend nasal cautery if:
- Nosebleeds happen often or keep returning.
- Bleeding comes from the same area each time.
- Home care has not been effective.
Not everyone with nosebleeds needs this treatment. Your provider will determine if it is appropriate for you.
What happens during a chemical nasal cautery?
Nasal cautery is usually done during an office visit. Before treatment, the inside of the nose is numbed with medication to improve comfort. The provider then treats the bleeding area to help stop bleeding and allow healing. The procedure is brief and does not require surgery.
Is nasal cautery painful?
Most patients tolerate nasal cautery well. Numbing medication is used to reduce discomfort, and the treatment is often less uncomfortable than repeated nosebleeds or nasal packing.
What should I expect after treatment?
After nasal cautery, your provider may recommend:
- Avoiding nose blowing for a short time.
- Keeping the inside of the nose moist with saline sprays or nasal lubricant.
- Avoiding picking or placing tissues inside the nose.
These steps help reduce the chance of repeat bleeding while the area heals.
Will nasal cautery prevent future nosebleeds?
Nasal cautery can be very effective for stopping bleeding from a specific area of the nose. Some people may need additional preventive care or follow-up depending on the cause of their nosebleeds.
