Why did I get a bill from a doctor or hospital I didn’t visit?

Sometimes you may receive a bill from a specialist or provider you didn’t see directly.

You might receive a bill from a provider who reviewed your test results, interpreted imaging or assisted during your care. Even if you didn’t meet them in person, these specialists often bill separately for their services. Examples include:

  • A radiologist reviewing your imaging results.
  • A pathologist analyzing a specimen.
  • A specialist providing a consultation.
  • An anesthesiologist assisting during surgery.
