Interests

Dr. Havens is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Truhlsen Eye Institute. He has served as the Residency Program Director for Ophthalmology since 2016. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, scoring in the 99th percentile on the written certification examination. Dr. Havens completed a Glaucoma and anterior segment surgery fellowship at the Duke University Eye Center in Durham, NC in 2014 before returning to UNMC.

Dr. Havens has a special interest in new glaucoma surgical interventions called the “Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgeries” or “MIGS.” Dr. Havens has expanded the surgical options for glaucoma management at UNMC to include the MIGS procedures like the iStent, Gonioscopic-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy, Kahook Dual Blade, and Endocyclophotocoagulation. The expanded glaucoma options for surgical intraocular pressure lowering allow better customization of procedures to patient preference, lifestyle, risk-stratification, and glaucoma severity.  He also specializes in more traditional incisional glaucoma surgeries including conventional and Express trabeculectomy and glaucoma tube shunt surgeries and their revisions.

Additional clinical services include:

  • Cataract surgery and secondary intraocular lens placement
  • Glaucoma consultation, medical therapy, clinical research and minimally invasive procedures
  • Complex anterior segment surgery
  • Comprehensive ophthalmology clinical care
  • Ophthalmic trauma management
