Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Substance use and other mental health disorders can go hand-in-hand for many individuals. The Nebraska Medicine Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides evidence-based, integrated care for people suffering from both addiction and other mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, trauma-related disorders, bipolar disorder, psychosis, or personality disorders. If you or someone you love is working to overcome these disorders, know that help is available.

The IOP brings together a multidisciplinary team of specialists to provide a comprehensive approach to intensive outpatient treatment. Our team empowers individuals to experience life without addiction and to better understand and manage mental health symptoms.

What to expect

During your first appointment, you will meet with a clinical therapist who will complete a thorough assessment. If our IOP is the right fit to meet your health care needs, we will create a custom treatment plan to address both substance use and any other mental health disorders.

Your treatment plan will include:

  • Group therapy
  • Individual therapy
  • Random urine drug screenings (UDSs)
  • Medication for substance use and other mental health disorders, if applicable

Our IOP teaches coping skills, such as emotion regulation, mindfulness, relapse prevention and values exploration. Family members are welcome to participate in assisting their loved ones with recovery.

We meet four days a week, three hours per day, for six weeks and offer an in-person or telehealth option. During group sessions, you will have assigned time to meet with your individual therapist weekly and medical provider as scheduled.

Upon completing IOP, your clinical therapist will assist in developing a treatment plan to help maintain your progress in recovery. We also offer a weekly aftercare group, led by one of the clinical therapists, for those who have completed the program, allowing you to stay connected with others who understand what you are going through and keep the material covered in IOP fresh in your mind.

Is IOP right for me?

Our IOP is ideal for adult patients requiring more than weekly or monthly outpatient support and who do not require immediate withdrawal management or residential treatment.
