Coronavirus (COVID-19) announced arrival 

The following instructions are for patients who have called ahead and the staff is aware that the patient is arriving for COVID-19 assessment and screening:  

  1. Prior to scheduling an appointment, please ensure that your have staff that are currently trained on appropriate PPE and specimen obtaining methodology for safety 
  2. Schedule the appointment and instruct the patient NOT to enter the main waiting room but to call the clinic from the car upon arrival to the parking lot 
  3. If a back door to the clinic is available, have the clinic staff who will be assessing the patient put on (don) the appropriate PPE (see below) and meet the patient to be screened at the back door 
  4. Prior to stepping into the clinic, the patient should be given a surgical mask and be asked to perform hand hygiene with hand sanitizer 
  5. Once complete, escort the patient immediately to a private room and close the door.  Key points include:  
    • Use a negative pressure room if available 
    • Use contact and airborne isolation signage (Available on resource page) 
    • Utilize the correct PPE (i.e., disposable gown, gloves, N-95 respirator and face shield/eye protection) 
  6. Initiate assessment:  
    • If not already performed, complete the Travel Screen located in OneChart. 
    • Verify symptoms, exposure and travel history using the COVID-19 specific Persons Under Investigation (PUI) screening questions as below:  
    • In the 14-days before symptom onset, did the patient: 
      • Travel to/from China, South Korea, Iran, Italy, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand OR travel to areas with known widespread community transmission of COVID19 
      • Identify the exact date of travel to stated areas and exact date of travel from stated areas. 
      • Visit or work in a health care facility in China, South Korea, Iran, Italy, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand OR visit or work in a healthcare facility in an area with known widespread community transmission of COVID19. 
      • Have close contact with an ill person from China, South Korea, Iran, Italy, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand OR have close contact with an ill person from an area with known widespread community transmission of COVID19. 
    • Other key questions to ask the patient:  
      • Are you part of a group of individuals who have a respiratory illness of unknown cause? 
      • Have you had close contact with a person who is under investigation for 2019- COVID-19 while that person was ill? 
      • Have you had close contact with a person with laboratory-confirmed 2019- COVID-19-infection? 
  7. After obtaining history, the provider, nurse or other staff should page Infection Control (ICE) at 402-888-4646 and be ready to provide the following information: 
    • Patient demographics (name, DOB, MRN) 
    • Answers to above questionnaire 
    • Vital Signs (if obtained) 
    • Exact dates of illness (onset) and country/area of travel concern 
    • Name of provider caring for patient and best call back number  
  8. Await further instructions from Infection Control (ICE) team
