Question:

Can a person transmit COVID-19 through hair or hair follicles?

Answer by dermatologist Megan Arthur, MD:

"The COVID-19 virus cannot transmit through hair follicles or hair strands," says Dr. Arthur. "It's predominately transmitted through respiratory droplets. That said, a COVID-19 infection can affect the hair follicles on our scalp by causing a shift of the phase our hair follicles are in."

Our hair is constantly in one of three phases: growth phase, resting phase and shedding phase. When significant stressors on our bodies occur, such as childbirth, a major illness, high fevers, certain medical conditions or major surgery, the stressor resets the hair follicles and shifts them into the shedding phase.

"Hair loss can be a sign of significant sign of stress on our body," says Dr. Arthur. "If you're losing hair, don't automatically assume it's due to having COVID-19. See your doctor to make sure there aren't any underlying conditions that may be causing your hair loss."

If you're experiencing hair loss due to COVID-19, there's a very good chance your hair will recover. It will take some time, typically three to six months or more.

The bottom line: No, COVID-19 is not transmitted through hair or hair follicles. Keep wearing a mask and taking precautions. To those with excess facial hair, make sure you have a good seal to lessen exposure to those respiratory droplets.
