You asked, we answered: Should I be concerned if I experience chest pain?

Question:
Should I be concerned if I experience temporary chest pain and arm tightness while exercising?
Answer from Edward O’Leary, MD, cardiologist:
The shorter answer is yes. Chest pain, even if temporary, should never be ignored, especially when accompanied by arm tightness. Chest pain is a symptom that can have many causes, some of which can be serious. It’s important to pay attention to your body and seek medical advice if you experience any discomfort during exercise.
While chest pain can sometimes be caused by musculoskeletal issues like muscle strain or overexertion, it can also be a sign of heart-related problems, including:
- Heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias)
- Coronary artery disease
- Pericarditis (inflammation of the lining around the heart)
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick)
Mitral valve prolapse (the heart's mitral valve doesn't close properly)
Chest pain accompanied by arm tightness could indicate a cardiovascular issue, especially if the pain radiates to other areas. Shortness of breath, dizziness or nausea with chest pain are also red flags.
Stop exercising immediately if you experience chest pain or discomfort. Seek medical care as soon as possible to rule out heart disease. It's especially important if you have risk factors like a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, smoking or diabetes.
The main takeaway is that any chest pain should be taken seriously. Contact your health care provider or go to an emergency room or urgent care for an evaluation. It’s essential to rule out serious conditions to protect your health.
