Question: What foods are good to eat for people with epilepsy?

Answer from Olga Taraschenko, MD, board-certified neurologist

Some people with epilepsy are sensitive to carbohydrates, which can exacerbate their seizures. These patients should avoid sweets and simple carbs. A regular healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables is recommended for all other patients with seizures.

Additionally, the ketogenic diet, which is very restrictive in carbohydrates, can be very effective in epilepsy patients. Because it can be hard to follow, children are more successful with the keto diet. Parents can limit and control what foods they buy. A modified Atkins or low-carb diet, usually recommended for teenagers and adults, will also help reduce seizures.
