For those with treatment-resistant depression, advances in research and technology have created new Food and Drug Administration-approved treatment options offering new hope for symptom relief.

Nebraska Medicine offers breakthrough treatments

Transcranial magnetic stimulation – TMS stimulates the brain in targeted areas to decrease chronic depression symptoms. With a response rate close to 60%, it resynchronizes and resets the brain. You may be eligible for TMS if you’ve had two medication trials for depression with minimal or no symptom improvement.

Esketamine – Esketamine is a nasal spray that treats depression in conjunction with oral antidepressants, helping them to work better. Treatment is approved for adults with treatment-resistant depression or major depressive disorder with suicidal ideation or behavior. Appropriate doses are self-administered at the clinic under medical supervision.

Electroconvulsive therapy – ECT is the most effective treatment for severe depression. ECT improves depressive symptoms by causing changes in brain chemistry and neural connections. Performed under general anesthesia, small electric currents are passed through the brain to achieve the most benefit with the fewest risks.
