Question:

I have been having health issues since April, and it's gotten worse. I'm a full-time mom, worker and wife. I just feel overwhelmed with working and keeping up with a family. Any advice?

Answered by women's mental health psychiatrist Marley Doyle, MD:

You are basically working two full-time jobs, plus overtime, so first give yourself a little grace. It's no wonder you are feeling overwhelmed! The next step is to ask yourself, "What needs to change?" The answer will be different for everyone. Perhaps, it's talking to your supervisor to see if there are more flexible work options. Perhaps it is outsourcing help or having friends/family help with childcare. Maybe it is talking to your partner about doing more around the house.

Once you have a target area, make small changes and keep open communication with your loved ones about how it is working. Feeling overwhelmed is often the initial sign that things are not sustainable. It's important to listen to this signal and make changes accordingly. If you notice that you are feeling anxious to the point that your health and relationships are affected, it may be helpful to talk to your doctor about treatment options.

You only have one life and deserve to feel fulfilled and happy!
