Who can participate
Open to anyone 16 years or older, including students, community members and Nebraska Medicine employees. Opportunities vary by department and availability.

Register through Apollo, our learning platform. You’ll receive next steps once your registration is submitted.
Complete required steps
Before shadowing, you may need to review guidelines, complete forms and confirm eligibility. Instructions are provided during registration.
Explore the job shadow experience
Learn more about what you may observe and gain during your job shadow experience.
Participants may have opportunities to observe areas such as:
- Nursing.
- Respiratory therapy.
- Occupational therapy.
- Imaging and radiology.
- Laboratory services.
- Administrative and support roles.
- Other clinical and non-clinical specialties.
Each job shadow experience lasts two to four hours. Participants may explore up to three different health care professions in one year for a maximum of 12 total hours.
During your job shadow experience, you will be paired with a health care professional and observe their daily work. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about different health care professions.
Job shadow participants will not provide hands-on patient care or receive academic credit.
Nebraska Medicine offers exposure to one of the region’s leading academic health systems. Participants can:

Other ways to engage with us
Job shadowing is a one-time observation experience that does not fulfill any clinical or internship requirements or provide hands-on experience. Job shadowing is available for individual participants only and is not offered for groups of students. If job shadowing is not the right fit for you, explore these options below.

Individuals interested in observing a hospital setting, consider volunteering. Volunteering offers an in-depth look into the world of health care and provides valuable experience for college and job applications.
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, meet a minimum time commitment and pass background and drug screenings. Please visit Volunteer Services or call 402.559.4197 for more information.

Frequently asked questions
Park in Lot 6 at 41st and Harney streets using the Park Omaha app (Zone 222; $3 fee). Please arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled time.
Your registration confirmation will include check-in instructions and information about where to report. Staff at the entrance will provide your ID badge. Use the campus map to navigate.
You must bring your completed application with you. If you do not bring it, you may be asked to reschedule.
Our first priority is protecting the health and safety of patients, families, staff and visitors. If you are sick on the day of your job shadow, you must reschedule by emailing jobshadow@nebraskamed.com.
Please stay home if you don’t feel well or if you have any of the following symptoms or conditions:
- Cold or cough.
- COVID-19.
- Fever (must be fever-free for 24 hours).
- Chickenpox.
- Pertussis (whooping cough).
- Influenza (respiratory flu).
- Stomach flu or gastrointestinal flu.
- Tuberculosis.
- Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
A professional appearance is required. Clothing should be clean, neat and appropriate for a health care setting.
You must wear closed-toe, nonslip shoes with socks or nylons in all hospital areas. Comfortable shoes are recommended, as your shadowing may require you to be on your feet for extended periods of time.
The following are not permitted:
- Jeans, leggings or sweatpants.
- Tank tops, bare midriffs or exposed undergarments.
- Baggy clothing or clothing that drags on the floor.
- Scrubs or lab coats.
- Sandals or flip-flops.
- Hats or dangling jewelry.
Tattoos and piercings should be covered when possible, and long hair should be secured.
During your job shadow, you will not need a purse, cell phone, pager or backpack. Avoid bringing bags, valuables, books, journals or large amounts of cash.
Cell phone use is not permitted during your job shadow.
Nebraska Medicine and the University of Nebraska Medical Center are not responsible for any theft of or damage to personal property, so it is best to leave important items at home.
