Infant Massage

Infant Massage as a Part of Family Centered Care

Mother massaging baby's head

The purpose for Infant Massage is to allow parents to contribute to their baby's health and wellness. Parents have the opportunity to provide a unique and personal approach in caring for their baby.

Nurses that have been through special training will be able to introduce massage to parents and be resources for them. Parents will watch a video and perform a return demonstration on a doll before performing massage on their infant. Parents will be given a step by step sheet covering the massage. They will be taught avoidance cues to recognize when to stop the massage.

Touch is the foundation for infant development. Numerous research studies indicate gentle touching and massage have shown faster weight gain, increased temperature stability, longer periods of quiet sleep, less apnea, improved oxygen saturations, enhanced neurological growth and development and lastly earlier discharge from the hospital.
