Deep Brain Stimulation
Nebraska Medicine Multidisciplinary Deep Brain Stimulation Program is one of the most comprehensive DBS programs in the region. We offer the full gamut of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgeries that have been approved for conditions like Tremor, Parkinson Disease, Dystonia and others. The Deep Brain Stimulation Program is comprised of six board-certified physicians with fellowship training in the complex management needed for DBS. We also have specially-trained neuropsychologist, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and registered nurse case managers that work all together to ensure the highest level of satisfaction for our customers.
We offer a multidisciplinary approach to DBS evaluation, through the sub specialized care provided by our Movement Disorders specialists. Our neurosurgeons have a collective case experience ranging in many hundreds.
We take very seriously our job on educating our patients on their many options. Making a decision to undergo brain surgery is not an easy one, but we believe that the best approach is to empower our patients with the knowledge needed to decide if DBS surgery would be the best option for them. Through our personalized evaluation process, our patients and their families have all of their questions answered.
We offer our patients an evaluation by a Movement Disorders specialist, followed by a comprehensive evaluation of candidacy for DBS. Through this process, the patients learn about all of the treatment options for their condition, including the non-surgical ones. The evaluation for candidacy might include an overnight stay in the hospital, evaluation of medication benefit and side effects, neuropsychological assessment, brain imaging, and many others. After all of the evaluations are completed, we take each case to our multidisciplinary DBS case discussion meetings, where each of the members of the team presents the results of their evaluation of the patient. At the end of this session, our team makes a single recommendation in regards to Deep Brain Stimulation candidacy, that is discussed back with the patient and his or her family.
If you want to learn more about your options and about DBS, please request an appointment with one of our Movement Disorders specialists.
