Meet the Team

Dr. Ioana Dumitru

is the medical director of the Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation Program at The Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Dumitru joined the team in 2003. She completed her cardiology fellowship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and her heart failure and cardiac transplantation fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Her clinical practice includes patients with advanced cardiac conditions in need of cardiac transplantation or post cardiac transplantation care. She is the only United Network for organ Sharing (UNOS) certified cardiologist in Nebraska and western Iowa.

Dr. John Windle

is the medical director of cardiology at The Nebraska Medical Center and the chief of cardiology and professor of internal medicine at the University Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). Dr. Windle has been on staff for 23 years. A board certified internist, cardiologist and electrophysiologist, Dr. Windle specializes in treating patients with arrhythmias and heart failure. Dr. Windle received his cardiology training at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Dr. Haysam Akkad

is an interventional cardiologist at The Nebraska Medical Center. He is a graduate of University of Aleppo Medical School in Syria. Dr. Akkad completed an internal medicine residency at St. Francis Medical Center in Pittsburgh, PA. He completed a fellowship in critical care medicine at State University of New York Health Science Center in Syracuse, NY. In Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Akkad completed his cardiology fellowship at MCP/Hahnemann University. Dr. Akkad also completed an interventional cardiology fellowship at University Pittsburg Medical Center in Pittsburgh, PA. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Internal Medicine - Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology. Dr. Akkad has been practicing cardiology since 2002.

Dr. Antonio Reyes

is a Cardiologist with over 12 years of experience. He is a graduate of Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska where he also completed an internship, residency and fellowship. Dr. Reyes is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Cardiovascular Disease. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. Arthur Easely

is a cardiac electrophysiologist at The Nebraska Medical Center. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and clinical electrophysiology. In 2008 he served on the hospital's Joint Commissions National Patient Safety Goal committee. He serves as the director of education for cardiology at UNMC and is also an associate professor at the university.

Dr. Scott Shurmur

is the only board certified lipidologist in the state of Nebraska, and one of only 400 certified lipidologist nation-wide. Nearly one-third of individuals over the age of 20 have high cholesterol, a risk factor for both heart attack and stroke. By receiving additional training in cholesterol management, cardiovascular risk assessment and intervention, Dr. Shurmur is able to help individuals battling high cholesterol by recommending LDL-lowering drug therapy and lifestyle changes to manage and lower the risk of a cardiovascular event.

Dr. Thomas R. Porter

is the leading imaging cardiologist in the state of Nebraska. He was recently appointed professor of radiology at The University of Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Porter is the only Level 3 MRI and CT cardiologist in the state of Nebraska.

Dr. John Um

is a cardiac transplant surgeon with a medical degree from Brown University School of Medicine, Providence, Rhode Island. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry New Jersey in New Brunswick, NJ and his cardio-thoracic surgery residency at the University of California San Francisco, CA. Dr. Um completed a fellowship in thoracic transplantation and mechanical assist devices at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, NC.
