The ASHP-accredited PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency at Nebraska Medicine offers a unique and stimulating learning environment providing comprehensive clinical training in critical care pharmacy practice. A resident completing this program will be a competent practitioner in the care of critically ill patients who will be qualified to function as a highly skilled critical care practitioner within a health system or in academia.
The resident will be integrally involved with health care professionals throughout the continuum of patient care, including patient education, assessment, and therapeutic recommendations. Working with experienced pharmacy clinicians, the resident will also gain experience serving as a preceptor for pharmacy students and PGY1 pharmacy residents. Residents will provide compassionate, evidence-based, progressive medical care. The program allows tailored instruction for the individual based on interest and past experiences.
Critical Care Specific Practice Environment
- Nebraska Medicine’s main campus has 96 licensed ICU beds
- Over 8,500 critically ill patients are cared for annually
- As the main referral center for the region, Nebraska Medicine sees a multitude of diverse, complex, and acute patient cases
- Designated by the American College of Surgeons as a Level One Trauma Center
- Designated as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by American Heart Association and the American Associates Brain Attack Coalition
- Center of Comprehensive Care for Pulmonary Hypertension
- Extracorporeal life support (ECMO) Center of Excellence and cardiac cath lab services

Service Commitment (Staffing) Experience (52 weeks, July through June)
PGY2 residents are required to fulfill the service commitment (staffing) designed to ensure that residents gain experience and can function as competent clinical practitioners. Each resident will train with preceptors and basic training will take place during the first month of residency.
As part of the service commitment for PGY2 residents, the following staffing requirements apply:
- The PGY2 critical care resident will staff every 4th weekend and every 4th Friday evening (offset)
- Residents will staff either one major holiday (Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving) or two minor holidays (Independence Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day)
- Staffing will occur in Adult Intensive Care Units
