A variety of health care professionals are involved in transplantation care at The Nebraska Medical Center. This helps to ensure that each patient receives the highest quality, most comprehensive and specialized care available.

The transplant surgeon will perform the surgery and supervise a patient’s care immediately following surgery. The transplant surgeon will also supervise the transplant evaluation and follow progress once they are discharged from the hospital.

Depending on the care required, patients will see physicians specializing in transplantation and a variety of other medical sub-specialists.

A nurse practitioner and physicians assistant practices medicine under a licensed physician and is an integral part of the transplant team. They obtain medical history, perform physical exams and participate in transplant evaluations. Nurse practitioners and physician assistants help follow a patient’s progress in the hospital and they will continue to serve an important role in follow-up care after transplant.

Transplant Coordinators are registered nurses that coordinate a patient’s treatment prior to and during their hospital stay and will also provide long-term follow-up care. The transplant coordinator provides education about transplantation and helps to prepare patients and their families for life before, during and after transplantation.

A social worker provides supportive counseling for patients and their families. They can help address the impact of transplant on aspects of lifestyle (such as adjustment to illness/hospitalization, and impact on the family/caregiver, employment, financial issues, etc.) They also help to provide information about housing, financial and fund-raising information, support groups and other resources that are available before and after transplant.

The financial coordinator will help guide patients through the financial process. They will assist with understanding insurance benefits and in identifying resources that may be available.

Transplant pharmacy financial counselors are specialized personnel, knowledgeable of pharmacy and pharmacy benefits processes. Our pharmacy counselors discuss insurance coverage and benefits, inform patients of their potentials medication and costs, and answer any question or address any concerns.

A psychiatrist or psychologist will meet with patients to obtain a general mental health history and be available for any developing needs.

A dietician will visit with patients before and after transplant to evaluate their diet and to help them maintain a healthy weight and a healthy body.

The transplant pharmacist will help patients to clearly understand their medications and how each affects the body.

Research Coordinators visit with patients about research studies that may be available to them and the process of participation should they be interested.

A Child Life Specialist assists pediatric transplant patients and their families with adjusting to the healthcare setting. They share information to give children an increasing understanding of their upcoming hospital experiences as well as help provide understanding to children of adult patients. These specialists promote ongoing growth and development and normalization of the hospital environment.
