Our team of professionals is widely recognized for their expertise and
innovation.
The program has consistently maintained a high volume of adult, pediatric
and living-donor kidney transplants and has patient survival rates that
exceed the national average. Patients have three kidney transplant options
at The Nebraska Medical Center. These include living-related, living
non-related and non-living donors.
Numerous physicians and medical professionals
will be involved in your care to ensure you receive the most comprehensive
and innovative treatments possible. Our multidisciplinary transplant
team includes transplant surgeons, staff physicians, consulting
physicians, nursing staff, clinical nurse coordinators, social
workers, child life specialists, psychologists, psychiatrists,
pharmacologists, financial counselors, pastoral services, patient
relations coordinators and others who are trained and dedicated
to providing extraordinary service to you and your family.
This team provides long-term care and constant
follow up to post-transplant patients. Ongoing research in pre-
and post-transplant issues includes multiple clinical trials and
research into the latest and most innovative transplant procedures
providing patients access to the newest treatment options.
As a transplant patient, you will receive care
at The Nebraska Medical Center’s Multi-Organ Transplant Clinic
which is located on the second floor of The Lied Transplant Center.
This clinic brings all solid organ transplant specialties to one
location for both the pre-transplant process and the post-transplant
follow-up care.
Self-Referral
Process
Patients can be referred to the Kidney Transplant Center for transplant
consideration from several sources: self-referral, physicians, dialysis
centers, social workers, family and insurance carriers. A referral can
be made to the transplant nurse coordinators who will be happy to answer
your questions and provide information. Please call 402-552-2440 to speak
with a transplant nurse coordinator.
Cooperative
Care
While transplant procedures take place in the hospital, a patient can
move to The Lied Transplant Center for recovery and to participate in
Cooperative Care once they are ambulatory, or able to move around. Cooperative
care is a revolutionary approach that allows patients and their care
partners to play an active role in the treatment and recovery process
following transplantation, cancer care and treatment of other illnesses.
Care partners, usually a family member or friend, assist in all aspects
of the recovery process including administering medications, monitoring
health changes, attending informational classes and more. The cooperative
care environment allows patients and care partners to learn the skills
they will need when they return home. Care partners and patients stay
in a comfortable home-like setting that includes a private bedroom, bathroom,
living room, kitchenette and two TV/VCRs.
