Post-Kidney Transplant Care

The extraordinary care that you received while hospitalized at The Nebraska Medical Center does not end at the time of discharge. The kidney team continues to follow and monitor your progress. Our team is available to you, your family members and your local physician to answer any questions after transplantation.

Going Home

After a kidney transplant, your life will be much different than life on dialysis. Activities will not be restricted and the medications will be very different. The diet will be easier to plan, although there may need to be limitations on the amount of salt and calories allowed. If you have questions or concerns about your diet, a dietician is available for assistance with nutritional planning.

You will need to have your blood and urine tested on a regular basis. This can be done at any hospital laboratory and may be needed daily after you first leave the hospital. Most often it is scheduled for three times a week, if the kidney functions well during your hospital stay. As the kidney proves to be working well, the transplant surgeon will lower the number of tests to once a month, and may lower the amount of medications needed.

You play a very important part in making your transplant a success. There are four basic patient responsibilities after transplant:

  1. Take medications as instructed.
  2. Have lab work done as scheduled.
  3. Call the transplant coordinator or doctor if there are any symptoms of rejection, infection or any other problem.
  4. Keep regular appointments with your doctor.
