Blood & Marrow Stem Cell Program

Research

The Nebraska Medical Center blood and marrow stem cell transplantation team is involved in many research protocols. Research is crucial to the advancement of transplant and other cancer treatments. It is through research we look for better, more effective ways to kill cancer cells. It is also through research that we determine better ways to treat or reduce post-transplant complications. Before becoming a participant in a research protocol, patients receive a full explanation of the study, its possible risks and possible benefits. Participants must give written consent before being enrolled in a research study.

The Nebraska Medical Center participates in a variety of clinical trials to test new, investigational drugs or to study new ways of using known treatments. By researching the latest and most innovative transplant procedures and therapies, we can provide patients access to the newest treatments. Once a patient has been evaluated and approved for transplant they may be eligible for participation in a clinical trial. Patients who are eligible to participate in a clinical trial will have the opportunity to review the study protocol to determine what is expected. The protocol will list details including the schedule of tests, procedures, medications, dosages, schedule of doctor appointments and the duration of the study.

Choosing to enroll in a research study is a personal decision that requires careful consideration of the potential advantages and disadvantages of participation. If you chose to enroll in the study, you will be asked to sign an informed consent document. This document is not a contract and you may withdraw at any time.
