Muscular Dystrophy (MD)

Muscular dystrophies are a group of more than 30 genetic diseases which result in progressive weakness and degeneration of the muscles that control movement. Some types of MD are identified during infancy or early childhood while other forms not may appear until middle age years or older. Information regarding the various types and management of MD can be found on the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke website. The symptoms of muscular dystrophy will vary with the different types of muscular dystrophy. In general, MD is characterized by muscle weakness that becomes worse over time.

At Nebraska Medicine a multidisciplinary team of specialists work together in the management of the weakness caused by MD. A dedicated team lead by MD specialists, review the needs of each individual to provide the best care possible. Members of the MD team ensure patients and families are surrounded by the support and assistance needed to face the challenges of MD.

Health services which may be necessary for an individual facing a diagnosis of MD are available at the medical center. The MD team will coordinate care for any of these specialty areas who all share an expertise in the management of the disease.
