Olson Center Provides All of a Woman's Health Care Needs

Women who receive care at the Olson Center for Women's Health have the benefit of getting all of their care provided under one roof, whether it's for preventive care like a mammogram or Pap smear test, or more long-term care for pregnancy or breast cancer.

Located at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, the Olson Center is a comprehensive health facility designed around a woman's needs that includes wellness, education, research and clinical care for every stage of a woman's life. The clinic brings together multiple specialists and services in one clinic including obstetrics, gynecology, internal medicine, breast care, high-risk obstetrics, midwifery, mammography, radiology, gynecological oncology, endocrinology, physical therapy, lactation counseling, genetic counseling, infertility, nutrition, smoking cessation and social work.

"I like to call it a one-stop approach because a woman can have all of her care coordinated here," says Sonja Kinney, MD, obstetrician/gynecologist at the Olson Center. The center includes state-of-the-art rooms that were upgraded several years ago with patient safety and privacy in mind.

"The Olson Center is also unique in that provides social workers and financial counselors in the clinic who can help patients navigate the system and ensure their financial resources are being reviewed," says Dr. Kinney. "I think many women delay getting medical care because they are worried about the costs. We have our financial counselors meet with patients before they begin care in order for patients to be aware of potential costs and to get assistance with applying for Medicaid or Medicare coverage, if necessary."

As part of UNMC, the Olson Center is involved with teaching medical students and resident physicians during patient care visits. "We try to clarify the student and teacher roles with patients and ensure that all care is directly reviewed by faculty," says Dr. Kinney. "We think it is important for patients to communicate their comfort level with having students either observe or participate fully in their care. Everything is supervised by our faculty staff. We maintain very regimented and professional standards."

Being part of a teaching environment also has its benefits, she says. "We use only evidence-based medicine and since we are always teaching, that forces us to be up-to-date on the very latest research and practices," says Dr. Kinney. "It keeps us on our toes.

"Our services are provided in a very comfortable, private and professional environment. We are very careful to make sure we are meeting all of our patients' needs."
