Philip W. Smith, M.D.,

Dr. Smith is recognized nationally for his bioterrorism preparedness expertise.
He serves as co-director of the Nebraska Center for Bioterrorism Education and is
on the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee of the Centers
for Disease Control (CDC). He has served on the board of the Society of Health Care
Epidemiology of America; as guest faculty at the CDC Hospital Epidemiology Course
in Atlanta, Georgia; and as president of the Nebraska Infection Control Network.
A Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Diseases Society
of America, Dr. Smith has more than 100 publications, including books, articles
and abstracts.

Mark Rupp, M.D.

Medical Director of the Department of Epidemiology at The Nebraska Medical Center
Dr. Rupp is the medical director of The Nebraska Medical Center Department of Healthcare
Epidemiology and the Clinical Trials Office. He is president of the Society of Health
Care Epidemiology of America, which strives for the highest quality of patient care
and health care worker safety in all health care settings. He has served as a consultant
for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, as well as the CDC. Dr. Rupp’s research
interests are in the areas of staphylococcal disease, healthcare-associated infections
and antimicrobial resistance.

One of UNMC's most recognizable physicians, Dr. Hinrichs developed a statewide program
for the rapid identification of biological and chemical agents of mass destruction
and implemented harmonized data standards for laboratory test results. His laboratory
has developed several advanced technologies for the identification of infectious
agents and new respiratory protection gear. Under his direction, the Nebraska Public
Health Laboratory was one of the first public health laboratories in the country
to develop Internet-based test ordering and reporting capabilities with the ultimate
goal of real-time identification of emerging epidemics.
