Frequently Asked Questions

Job Shadowing at the Nebraska Medical Center an Omaha Hospital

What should I do with my printed application form?

Please return your signed application and confidentiality form on the day of your job shadow so that we may verify signatures. If you are under 19 years of age, your parent or legal guardian must sign the forms.

I am younger than 19. Do I need my parents to sign the job shadowing application form?

Yes. If you are under the age of 19, your parent or legal guardian must sign the job shadowing application in order for you to participate. You will be required to turn in a signed parental consent form on the day of your shadow.

I have completed the job shadow request form- what happens next?

Someone will review your online application to be sure you have included all required information. Once reviewed, requests will be directed to the department you have indicated. The department will contact you directly to set up a shadowing experience.

How far in advance should I submit my job shadowing application?

The job shadowing request should be submitted at least two months prior to your deadline for completion of a job shadow. Please allow this much time in advance of any schoolwork, project deadlines or school application requirements.

Are there certain areas that do not accept job shadowing students?

Yes. Patient care areas that serve high-risk patients do not accept job shadowing students regardless of your level of education or training. Some examples of high-risk areas include (but are not limited to): Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Adult Crisis Unit (ACU), Surgical or Interventional Procedure areas, Pre-Operative and Post- Anesthesia Care Units, Hematology and Oncology, Transplant, and Labor and Delivery Units. Shadowing applications for all other areas are subject to manager approval.

I am looking for clinical experience to fulfill a requirement of my medical education program. Will the job shadowing program provide this clinical experience?

No. Job Shadowing is a one-time, observation only experience lasting two to four hours. No patient care will be allowed and therefore, no real clinical experience is obtained.

I have a set of scrubs or a lab coat in my possession. Is it okay to wear this for my job shadow?

No. Scrubs and lab coats are reserved for members of the care provider team. Job shadowing students are here for observational purposes only and should never be misrepresented as a health-care provider, regardless of their level of education or training. If special attire is required for your protection, the department will issue these garments to you.

I am a teacher at an area school looking to set up job shadowing experiences for a group of students- can I do this through the website?

No. Job shadowing is an individual experience. The medical center may be able to provide alternatives to job shadowing for your group. The Speaker’s Bureau may be available for presentations to students under the age of 16 or for large groups. Fill out a speaker request form.

I have a job shadowing scheduled for today, but I am sick. What should I do?

Please contact your facilitator and ask to reschedule your appointment. Please do not risk exposing patients or staff to illness. Individuals who are visibly ill will not be permitted to do a job shadowing and will be sent home.

What should I do if I come down with a high fever, Influenza, Chicken Pox, Measles, Tuberculosis, MRSA, or some other communicable disease within 48 hours after participating in a job shadowing at the medical center?

Please contact jobshadow@nebraskamed.com immediately. It is very important for us to notify all appropriate individuals in an effort to prevent a potentially harmful outbreak that would threaten the health of our patients as well as our healthcare workers.
