Antibiotic Desensitization
Several antibiotic desensitization protocol order forms have been developed by the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program and Jill Poole, MD, and are approved for use at The Nebraska Medical Center by the Antimicrobial Subcommittee, Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, and Medical Executive Committee. The impetus for the development of these forms was for use in the cystic fibrosis population, when antibiotic options are often limited not only by allergies but also by resistance patterns. However, the forms offer a convenient method of ordering antibiotic desensitization for other patient populations as well.
A word of caution, antibiotic desensitization protocols do not eliminate the risk of true anaphylaxis. Thus, antibiotic desensitization should only be considered and utilized with caution and only when other alternatives have been exhausted. Antibiotic desensitization protocols should only be performed in a monitored setting in which resuscitative efforts could be immediately employed as needed.
