Kim's Story

Kim cannot remember a time when she wasn’t heavy. At 363 pounds, her heaviest weight, she knew she needed to make a change. Kim lost 177 pounds – almost half of her initial body weight – through gastric bypass surgery. Now instead of sitting in a chair all day, she travels extensively and has even gone zip lining!

Hallie's Story

Hallie was ridiculed and bullied for her weight throughout elementary and high school. It was so devastating that she didn’t plan to attend college. At 17 years old and nearly 400 pounds, her health issues were compounding quickly. Through weight loss and bariatric surgery she lost 185 pounds - now she has no limitations due to her weight.

Cindy's Story

Cindy found out her husband needed a kidney transplant she wanted to be his donor, but doctors said she could not be considered due to her BMI. Through her motivation to help her husband, Cindy was able to reach her own goals and will be able to donate once her husband becomes eligible for transplant.

Barb's Story

Weight didn’t become an issue for Barb until later in life. Through a non-surgical weight loss program called New Direction, Barb lost 90 pounds by learning healthy eating habits and portion control. She sees a noticeable improvement in her physical ability since losing the weight and feels like she has gained her life back.

Jack's story

Jack was always pretty athletic, but then he started working the night shift and his weight started to spiral out of control. At 333 pounds, Jack was a diabetic, had sleep apnea and high cholesterol. Now he can walk without pain and he no longer suffers from sleep apnea or high cholesterol. For Jack, bariatric surgery was truly a life-saver.

Macala’s Story

Macala struggled with weight growing up. After several children, multiple diets, losing weight and gaining it back, she opted to have weight loss surgery. It has given her the jump start she needed to live a healthier lifestyle.

Elliot's Story

Elliot has lost over 300 pounds. As a young child he was diagnosed with a condition that caused him to gain weight. He reached a point when he knew he had to make a drastic, and life-saving change: weight loss surgery.

The Bariatrics Center

Patients share their stories of weight loss success and doctors explain what patients should expect to experience while being treated here. The Bariatrics Center combines both medical and surgical approaches to weight loss in one facility.

There is no cure for obesity; however, there are effective tools to treat the disease.
The Bariatrics Center is the only program in the region to integrate medical and surgical weight management options.
The Bariatrics Center offers diabetes and endocrine support needed to treat the most advanced cases and surgical revisions.
The Bariatrics Center is appropriate for anyone with a body mass index (BMI) over 27.
Did you know? Up to 10 percent of weight gain can be caused by medicines taken for chronic health issues.
At the Bariatrics Center, individual sessions and group classes address portion control, fat and salt content and the importance of protein in a diet.
Weight loss surgery is a tool for weight management. It is not an ultimate solution and requires a lifetime commitment to lifestyle change.
The laparoscopic surgeries offered at the Bariatrics Center include: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), sleeve gastrectomy, adjustable gastric banding, biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch and revisions.
The Bariatrics Center offers both the Lap-Band® and Realize Band® laparoscopic adjustable gastric band options.
Patients feel confident to make positive changes for their health when visiting a clinic featuring size-appropriate accommodations.

Our multidisciplinary team includes obesity medicine specialists, bariatric surgeons, physician assistants, endocrinologists, dietitians, psychologists, clinical nurse case managers and insurance coordinators who are dedicated to providing exceptional care to patients and their families.

The Bariatrics Center at Nebraska Medicine has a team of physicians who are supported by a multidisciplinary group of highly trained specialists to guide each patient through their weight loss journey.
